Learn the modes, and the two things that make chat feel different here.
Do this
Ask it something about a folder on your machine. Give it the path.
Try this
Look at <C:\path\to\a\folder> and tell me what is in it, which files are the biggest, and anything that looks out of place. Do not change anything.
Switch to Plan mode and ask for something multi-step. It explores read-only and writes one plan.
Try this
Plan a tidy-up of <C:\path\to\a\folder>: what to archive, what to delete, what to leave alone. I want to read the plan before anything moves.
Approve the plan. The same conversation carries on with the checklist loaded.
When a suggestion appears in the composer after a reply, press Tab to take it.
Mid-answer, type @btw and ask a side question. The main answer keeps going.

What just happened
Plan mode exists because the expensive mistake is not a wrong edit, it is twenty wrong edits made confidently. Separating "work out what to do" from "do it" gives you one thing to read instead of a diff to unpick.
